I see no harm in using one or the other, whatever lets you keep them. In the past I have used both the dll and patch at the same time without issue, but my circumstances are not the same as others. The folks I mentioned above helped with the discovery! I tested on my own game and the patch was successful. Patch process via the inventory editor is now working and can be used with or without d3d9.dll in order to stop disappearing Helix items.
